How Video Games Helped Me Expand My Social Circle

How Video Games Helped Me Expand My Social Circle
I grew up playing video games; from my Playstation One when I was 7 to my current Nintendo Switch at 26. I am obsessed with gaming and its culture. If you take a stroll through my Instagram, you’ll know how much I post about gaming— in fact, my entire Instagram and creative space is fueled by my passion and love for video games.
As a casual gamer, I play games in my free time. Weekends are reserved for indulging in my fictional game world. Weekdays after work, I would randomly pick up my Nintendo Switch for a few good hours of gaming. I integrate my hobby into my lifestyle at this point and I have to say that I am at the happiest moment of my life.
Most people might say that gaming is a lonely hobby, but I beg to differ. How is my love for video gaming a lonely hobby when it has brought me new friends and experiences, as well as encouraged my confidence in making new friends? Contrary to popular belief, my love for video games has brought so many friends into my life and expanded my social circle in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
You must be wondering:
How exactly have video games helped me expand my social circle?
1. Playing social games
Defining social gaming is not a difficult concept. The word ‘social’ itself is a dead giveaway, don’t you think? Social games are games where you need to engage with other people (or your friends) to play with or against them. You can include your real-life friends or meet new friends in the game to play together.
The latest social game that I’ve been enjoying these days is called Among Us. I’m sure you have played it too, right? Funnily enough, this game has reacquainted me with my high school mates. Now, we have a dedicated Discord server to plan our gaming nights. We went from “Oh, I went to the same school as her,” to “Oh yeah, she’s my friend!”, which is a huge leap for me in my social circle.
2. Globally connected with other gaming ‘kakis’
The people I’ve been lucky to come across are not limited to one geographical location but are from different parts of the world. Imagine having friends from multiple countries around the world.
A simple way to get to know one another is via the in-game chatroom. Games have this wonderful befriending system (much like Facebook’s!) where you just have to send a friend invitation and bam — you’re now friends who can schedule game sessions together! If you’re a shy person, using this simple feature is a great way to build connections and also your confidence in making friends.
3. My “odd” hobby is a conversation-starter
I used to be a shy person, lacking self-confidence due to my “odd” hobby. While most teenage girls obsessed over fashion and makeup back then, I was an odd duck with my love of video games. I was embarrassed as I was teased by other girls for being “different”. As I grew up, I noticed that all that teasing did nothing but fuel my love for video games even more.
While I initially struggled to express myself and to make friends, video games offered me warmth and comfort to fully express my thoughts through the game. As time went by, I became more thoughtful and expressive with my words. Today, I proudly tell people that I love to play video games. This invites more curious questions and starts conversations. And when conversations begin, we become more acquainted with the other person, thus expanding our social circle!
4. The gaming community
Like how K-POP fans have their fandoms and communities, gamers also have the same. In Malaysia, gaming communities or groups are abundant on Reddit and Facebook. We share our thoughts on the latest games and our game reviews, and we even buy, sell, and trade items in the group itself.
When someone publishes a post about needing help to understand a certain feature of a game, the comment threads will be filled with helpful information, details, and suggestions.
That’s how we connect. We share many things on these groups as long as they abide by the rules of the community. In many ways, we have bonded with each other by sharing inside jokes, poking fun at weird games, and so on. The gaming community is huge and it’s filled with friendly faces.
As mentioned above, loving video games is not a lonely hobby. More than anything, I have made many friends and met many interesting people throughout my entire journey of being a gamer. The interactions we have with each other are all so pure and supportive. This is exactly how video games have helped me expand my social circle.

Why You Should Start A Blog To Expand Your Writing Portfolio

Why You Should Start A Blog To Expand Your Writing Portfolio
The most difficult thing about writing for a living is knowing where to start. Like many writers who sought to begin their journey, gliding across words as they tapped on their keyboards, I had my fair share of struggles when I first began a career in writing. Many people have told me, “You only need a writing portfolio if you want to be a freelance writer.” Huh?
That was such outdated advice, and it is arguably the most unprofessional advice anyone can give you. I’m sure for budding writers or dreamers who wish to pursue a career in writing, you’ve heard of something called a writing portfolio. The word “portfolio” seems so daunting, but let me simplify it for you. Perhaps ”blog” is the word that you’re more comfortable with. There are many types of portfolios out there, but for wordsmiths like us, a blog is a great online portfolio.
Regardless if you’re a freelance writer or a full-time writer, you MUST have a vast writing portfolio if you are looking to pursue a career in writing. Don’t just assume that only freelance writers need them— oh, you’ll need them too. On my many peregrinations of becoming a full-time writer/copy-editor, my blog has been my best asset to sell my skills. And by such luck, you have stumbled across this article where I will be sharing some simple yet effective advice with you on why you should start a blog to expand your writing portfolio.
1. To build confidence
Writing recreationally in your own free time and actually publishing pieces on an online platform for thousands to read are vastly different feelings. To show your confidence, or even build it, writing and publishing on a blog is your first step towards feeling more positive about your work. If you’re too shy to publish your writings on your blog, it simply shows that you are not comfortable with showing people your work. Perhaps there is something you’re still unsure about. If you are not confident enough to publish on your own blog where you have full power, how can you be confident in writing for others? When you reach the point of self-assurance after writing extensively on your own blog, you are ready to write for others.
2. Experience sells
Blogging fuels an adventurous heart and brings more curiosities. To me, my blog incites a sense of adventure within me. I feel the rush and excitement to travel to new places, try out new food, and experience new things. While all of these experiences enrich your life, it also helps you to sell your writing. Have you encountered a situation when your prospective employer or client asks you for a certain type of article, such as a topic about food? Look into your blog and see if you have any experience in writing about this topic — it could be a café review or an article on how to make pasta from scratch. These are your golden tickets to landing a job with your prospective client!
3. As a creative outlet
Think of your blog as a notepad. Writers or wordsmiths like us are creative people. We indulge ourselves in words, sentences, and stories to express ourselves and stay creative. If you’re gifted with the ability to turn words into captivating stories, use it! Write a lot, practice, and come up with your signature writing style. When you’re consistently writing on your blog, you’ll find that words and narratives come to you smoothly. Your blog will be your creative outlet to unfurl your skills as well as test out new writing styles you’ve adapted. You might find yourself deleting certain older posts you’ve published, and that is because you have grown as a writer. I’ve had my fair share of deleting my posts from time to time because my work has evolved, which shows my growth and improvement.
4. To learn new skills
Managing a blog does not only teach you how to write but also many skills that are related to it, such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) writing, content management, creating web graphics, website hosting, and many more. Phew, that seems like a lot to learn along the way, doesn’t it? But rest assured: If I can start with zero knowledge in these matters and work my way up to what I’ve become today, you can too! In this age where everything is slowly turning digital, these skills will assist you and get you far in life. Not only can you offer your skills as a writer, but also your skills in managing content, niche writing, and even web design!
5. Everything is online
These days, we no longer carry a physical folder of our works around with us. Everything is kept within a link for easy access—this is where a blog comes in handy. Putting your pieces on your blog ensures that your work is easily accessible by you and your clients/employers. Aside from that, if you have the itch to edit something quickly before meeting a prospective client, you can just log in and make the relevant edits regardless of where you are. I have a section on my blog that is dedicated to my published works, where prospects can view them easily and I have direct access to them without needing to go through my computer to retrieve a specific article.
There are so many more reasons why you should start a blog, but these five points are key reasons why you must have your own blog today. Now that you have found your purpose in starting a blog and you have some pieces on standby, how can you start to expand your blog or portfolio?
1. Find a niche
Before you post your works online, understanding what you are marvellous at is one of the most important parts of blogging. If you have an interest in cooking, centre your focus around food, recipes, and cooking-related topics. There’s so much to talk about once you have established your own niche or specialty. All these topics are written for different audiences. For example, a café review appeals to people who love to explore new cafes, while a recipe post will appeal to those who love to cook at home. Your niche and topic will help you to decide what type of writing style you can experiment with. But if you do not have a niche, fret not! Your blog is entirely yours to play around with. Don’t worry and just have fun writing whatever you want.
2. Start writing and posting consistently
Now your blog is up and running, you have an interesting topic, but you’re missing something. Doesn’t it look a little empty? Time to plug in your creative juices and make your first post. You can even import your previous works into your current blog. Remember, the blog is yours and it is up to you what you want to write. The client is you. Aside from your work, write constantly, and keep it updated. A good way to keep our blog healthy and active is to post at least once a week, or any schedule you deem fit. More writings mean more examples to show to potential clients!
3. Feed your blog with various writings
Don’t limit yourself to only one style of writing. I have written short stories, poems, wordy articles, and even short articles on my blog. Although they aren’t published professionally, I have enjoyed writing them and if there is a need to show them as examples, they are part of my repertoire. Always prepare an umbrella before it rains. Don’t wait until your clients ask you for a certain type of article before you rush to get it written.
Now that you have found your purpose in starting a blog as well as the follow-through steps on implementing and expanding your writing portfolio, you are ready to take the literary world by storm. A blog should ignite your curiosity and be the reason why you crave to write and create. Think of your blog not only as your portfolio but also as a motivation tool that brings you closer to your dreams and career goals.

The Magnolia Tree

The Magnolia Tree
How I wish to see the gorgeous petals and blooms of Magnolias once again, taking me back to the times when I was young, naive and filled with a curious heart. The Magnolia tree, in full bloom, unfurls its cuplike petals— sturdy yet graceful. As if nothing can stain it’s being. As if nothing can hurt me.
I remember the days I used to stare at the single tree, billowing in the wind while it stands lonely yet radiating with so much energy that it was truly never alone.
The sturdy stems connecting each flower to the branch. As I watch the wind blow, leaves rustle yet the Magnolia flowers never waver. It swayed with the wind, like it’s a part of it but never letting it detach them from the branches. Such endurance.
White petals blend into pink shades that symbolizes purity. Reminds me to avoid things that stain your mind, body and emotions. Do not let things leave scars on your being. Heal when you must. Associate yourself with things that make you worthy. Being the real you: pure and unwavering is the best course of life.

Simple habits to make 2021 a better year for you

Simple habits to make 2021 a better year for you
I woke up thinking about the things I can do to make my year a better year for me. If I believe these habits can bring a smile on my face, I believe it works the same for you. Small little simple habits that are easy to follow.
Sleep is essential, and like every soul, it needs rest. I sleep 8-hours on a good night to wake up feeling refreshed, lighter and in a better mood. My mind was ready to kickstart as ideas and plans flowed through me easily. I know myself the best— hence getting any sleep less than 6 hours a night will turn me into an angry bitch but of course, who’s to blame but my own self for not putting down the screen.
Sleep at least 7 hours a night
Sleep is essential, and like every soul, it needs rest. I sleep 8-hours on a good night to wake up feeling refreshed, lighter and in a better mood. My mind was ready to kickstart as ideas and plans flowed through me easily. I know myself the best— hence getting any sleep less than 6 hours a night will turn me into an angry bitch but of course, who’s to blame but my own self for not putting down the screen.
Scrolling through the night, thinking to myself that I can still operate on 5 hours sleep. Of course, we can all still operate even on 3 hours of sleep (on some days), but we operate differently. Our emotion, perspective, tantrums and productivity are compromised when we sleep less.
Try making a simple habit of getting 7 hours of solid sleep every night— of course partying till late night once in a while is okay but always kick yourself back to a disciplined sleeping schedule if you want to make the most of your day time. Trust me on this, I’ve been both the pleasant person and an angry bitch depending on the hours I’ve slept. Be the pleasant person.
Living in Malaysia where walking is not really an option to get anywhere except if you’re going to the mini mart just in front of your house, there’s barely a proper pavement for pedestrians in where I live. Nevertheless, walk as much as you can. Take the stairs when you can, drive to the nearest park and walk among the lush green trees and grass. If exercising is not your cup of tea, walking helps you to keep your body moving. Especially if you’re working on your desk 9 hours a day, take a brief walk to your pantry every hour. Walking helps to tear you away from your work as you refresh your mind with a breather— and your body the movement they need.

When you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious of stress: take a walk.
Check in on friends and family
Now that the pandemic has reached a full year, we’re still socially distancing from our friends and families. Everyone is busy with their days and their lives— and the pandemic isn’t treating everyone kindly. Everyone is struggling a little more trying to keep afloat on their boat. Text your friends and check in on how they’re doing, send a greeting to your grandmother and ask if there is anything you can help with. Spark conversations with your contact list because who knows, you might just rekindle an old friendship.
Spend time with yourself
We’ve been spending so much time at home recently, with the quarantine and movement control order still in place. As the number of cases rises into alarming digits these days, it’s wise to just stay home and enjoy your own company. I find this truly a difficult concept to practice after being attached to a partner— I felt like I barely spent time with myself.
Taking a few days off just to relax, play and have fun by myself nurtures your inner child. The person who holds you dear which has been neglected as we’re all consumed by friends, families and partners. Make up a movie date for yourself, bring yourself some good treats and read a book. Start a hobby or take walks by yourself. Just immerse in the time you’re spending with yourself, you’ll learn to be happier.
1-minute rule
I find myself misplacing things pretty often because of my laziness to just put them back at where they belong. On some days, my bed is not made or my health supplements aren't taken. These things only require 1 minute of my time, yet I procrastinated hence not getting them done. If something requires only 1 minute of your time, like putting back your books or making your bed, do it. You’ll find your life more organized if you do these small little things
Read your affirmations daily
Sometimes we need a little positive boost. Even on my darkest days, I find reciting affirmations helps in lightening a dark place. Words are powerful as long as you believe in them. Affirmations work hand in hand with the LOA, hence, not only you’re manifesting, you’re also tricking your brain into thinking what you can do and feel. Read your affirmations daily to feel empowered.
A list of my favorite affirmations I read daily:
- I trust that I am on the right path.
- My possibilities are endless.
- I choose to be happy today.
- I will not worry about things I cannot control.
Start small positive habits and see the difference in makes in your world. Let’s make 2021 a better year than before— these habits can be a pivoting part of your life.

Bridgerton Review: Of sparkling glamour, delicious tea and scathing gossips.

Bridgerton Review
*This review does not contain any spoiler
"Dear reader, if there is a scandal, I shall uncover it." — Lady Whistledown
I find myself tossing an odd sentence here and there laced in British accent towards my boyfriend the past week after an obsessive binge-watching session of Bridgerton. If you’ve never heard of Bridgerton, have you been on social media?
Bridgerton is Netflix’s hottest drama which reminds you of a Regency era Gossip Girl. With Julie Andrews narrating throughout the show as the Lady Whistledown, I felt as if I was thrown into the 1800s— life of sparkling glamour, delicious tea and scathing gossips.
The series follows the story of the Bridgertons— a powerful and prestigious family where their eldest daughter was set for a society debut in London’s marriage market. With subplots of other families members and also other prestigious families, Bridgerton is filled with so much story of wealth, lust and betrayal. All reported by an anonymous, Lady Whistledown.
Who is Lady Whistledown exactly? She has eyes and ears everywhere. Bridgerton is indeed a period piece infused with a modern charm.
Intricate dresses, beautiful music and graceful acting caught my attention. For most times, I was relishing in its fancy costumes, hairdo and jewellery. But it doesn’t make me forget about the elegant architecture, tea spreads and most of all, their lifestyle in the movie.
Lavish and perfect. Down to the little details on the teapots, I am absolutely in love with its aesthetic.
The storyline was easy to follow, it keeps you on your toes for what’s next to happen and absolutely unpredictable. I mean, when was the last time I’ve enjoyed an English tv show without quitting halfway through? Bridgerton is beautiful with a lustful storyline and cheap gossip— just what I was expecting to fill my angsty-dramatic soul.
If escaping your humdrum life after work is what you need: grab a glass of wine and settle down with an episode of Bridgerton, you’ll find yourself whisked away into a story of glamour and romance.
Rating: 9/10

Word of the year: Celebrate

Word of the year: Celebrate
To start off a new year, 2021— I believe that this year will be filled with great things once again. As I'm writing this from the awkward comfort of my desk (I usually write on my bed), I shall make this small piece of writing quick before my back decides to sore.
2021 will be a year where I find time to heal and soothe my mind + soul. A year where I want to experience an abundance of happiness from all aspects in life.
This year, I want to celebrate. My word: celebrate. Celebrate the little things in life. Celebrate the good and the bad, for there is always a silver lining.
Celebration will be my attitude no matter what life brings.
Till then,
Melody.
