How Video Games Helped Me Expand My Social Circle

How Video Games Helped Me Expand My Social Circle
I grew up playing video games; from my Playstation One when I was 7 to my current Nintendo Switch at 26. I am obsessed with gaming and its culture. If you take a stroll through my Instagram, you’ll know how much I post about gaming— in fact, my entire Instagram and creative space is fueled by my passion and love for video games.
As a casual gamer, I play games in my free time. Weekends are reserved for indulging in my fictional game world. Weekdays after work, I would randomly pick up my Nintendo Switch for a few good hours of gaming. I integrate my hobby into my lifestyle at this point and I have to say that I am at the happiest moment of my life.

Most people might say that gaming is a lonely hobby, but I beg to differ. How is my love for video gaming a lonely hobby when it has brought me new friends and experiences, as well as encouraged my confidence in making new friends? Contrary to popular belief, my love for video games has brought so many friends into my life and expanded my social circle in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
You must be wondering:
How exactly have video games helped me expand my social circle?
1. Playing social games

Defining social gaming is not a difficult concept. The word ‘social’ itself is a dead giveaway, don’t you think? Social games are games where you need to engage with other people (or your friends) to play with or against them. You can include your real-life friends or meet new friends in the game to play together.
The latest social game that I’ve been enjoying these days is called Among Us. I’m sure you have played it too, right? Funnily enough, this game has reacquainted me with my high school mates. Now, we have a dedicated Discord server to plan our gaming nights. We went from “Oh, I went to the same school as her,” to “Oh yeah, she’s my friend!”, which is a huge leap for me in my social circle.
2. Globally connected with other gaming ‘kakis’

The people I’ve been lucky to come across are not limited to one geographical location but are from different parts of the world. Imagine having friends from multiple countries around the world.
A simple way to get to know one another is via the in-game chatroom. Games have this wonderful befriending system (much like Facebook’s!) where you just have to send a friend invitation and bam — you’re now friends who can schedule game sessions together! If you’re a shy person, using this simple feature is a great way to build connections and also your confidence in making friends.
3. My “odd” hobby is a conversation-starter
I used to be a shy person, lacking self-confidence due to my “odd” hobby. While most teenage girls obsessed over fashion and makeup back then, I was an odd duck with my love of video games. I was embarrassed as I was teased by other girls for being “different”. As I grew up, I noticed that all that teasing did nothing but fuel my love for video games even more.
While I initially struggled to express myself and to make friends, video games offered me warmth and comfort to fully express my thoughts through the game. As time went by, I became more thoughtful and expressive with my words. Today, I proudly tell people that I love to play video games. This invites more curious questions and starts conversations. And when conversations begin, we become more acquainted with the other person, thus expanding our social circle!

4. The gaming community
Like how K-POP fans have their fandoms and communities, gamers also have the same. In Malaysia, gaming communities or groups are abundant on Reddit and Facebook. We share our thoughts on the latest games and our game reviews, and we even buy, sell, and trade items in the group itself.
When someone publishes a post about needing help to understand a certain feature of a game, the comment threads will be filled with helpful information, details, and suggestions.
That’s how we connect. We share many things on these groups as long as they abide by the rules of the community. In many ways, we have bonded with each other by sharing inside jokes, poking fun at weird games, and so on. The gaming community is huge and it’s filled with friendly faces.
As mentioned above, loving video games is not a lonely hobby. More than anything, I have made many friends and met many interesting people throughout my entire journey of being a gamer. The interactions we have with each other are all so pure and supportive. This is exactly how video games have helped me expand my social circle.

Why You Should Start A Blog To Expand Your Writing Portfolio

Why You Should Start A Blog To Expand Your Writing Portfolio
The most difficult thing about writing for a living is knowing where to start. Like many writers who sought to begin their journey, gliding across words as they tapped on their keyboards, I had my fair share of struggles when I first began a career in writing. Many people have told me, “You only need a writing portfolio if you want to be a freelance writer.” Huh?
That was such outdated advice, and it is arguably the most unprofessional advice anyone can give you. I’m sure for budding writers or dreamers who wish to pursue a career in writing, you’ve heard of something called a writing portfolio. The word “portfolio” seems so daunting, but let me simplify it for you. Perhaps ”blog” is the word that you’re more comfortable with. There are many types of portfolios out there, but for wordsmiths like us, a blog is a great online portfolio.
Regardless if you’re a freelance writer or a full-time writer, you MUST have a vast writing portfolio if you are looking to pursue a career in writing. Don’t just assume that only freelance writers need them— oh, you’ll need them too. On my many peregrinations of becoming a full-time writer/copy-editor, my blog has been my best asset to sell my skills. And by such luck, you have stumbled across this article where I will be sharing some simple yet effective advice with you on why you should start a blog to expand your writing portfolio.
1. To build confidence

Writing recreationally in your own free time and actually publishing pieces on an online platform for thousands to read are vastly different feelings. To show your confidence, or even build it, writing and publishing on a blog is your first step towards feeling more positive about your work. If you’re too shy to publish your writings on your blog, it simply shows that you are not comfortable with showing people your work. Perhaps there is something you’re still unsure about. If you are not confident enough to publish on your own blog where you have full power, how can you be confident in writing for others? When you reach the point of self-assurance after writing extensively on your own blog, you are ready to write for others.
2. Experience sells
Blogging fuels an adventurous heart and brings more curiosities. To me, my blog incites a sense of adventure within me. I feel the rush and excitement to travel to new places, try out new food, and experience new things. While all of these experiences enrich your life, it also helps you to sell your writing. Have you encountered a situation when your prospective employer or client asks you for a certain type of article, such as a topic about food? Look into your blog and see if you have any experience in writing about this topic — it could be a café review or an article on how to make pasta from scratch. These are your golden tickets to landing a job with your prospective client!
3. As a creative outlet

Think of your blog as a notepad. Writers or wordsmiths like us are creative people. We indulge ourselves in words, sentences, and stories to express ourselves and stay creative. If you’re gifted with the ability to turn words into captivating stories, use it! Write a lot, practice, and come up with your signature writing style. When you’re consistently writing on your blog, you’ll find that words and narratives come to you smoothly. Your blog will be your creative outlet to unfurl your skills as well as test out new writing styles you’ve adapted. You might find yourself deleting certain older posts you’ve published, and that is because you have grown as a writer. I’ve had my fair share of deleting my posts from time to time because my work has evolved, which shows my growth and improvement.
4. To learn new skills
Managing a blog does not only teach you how to write but also many skills that are related to it, such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) writing, content management, creating web graphics, website hosting, and many more. Phew, that seems like a lot to learn along the way, doesn’t it? But rest assured: If I can start with zero knowledge in these matters and work my way up to what I’ve become today, you can too! In this age where everything is slowly turning digital, these skills will assist you and get you far in life. Not only can you offer your skills as a writer, but also your skills in managing content, niche writing, and even web design!
5. Everything is online

These days, we no longer carry a physical folder of our works around with us. Everything is kept within a link for easy access—this is where a blog comes in handy. Putting your pieces on your blog ensures that your work is easily accessible by you and your clients/employers. Aside from that, if you have the itch to edit something quickly before meeting a prospective client, you can just log in and make the relevant edits regardless of where you are. I have a section on my blog that is dedicated to my published works, where prospects can view them easily and I have direct access to them without needing to go through my computer to retrieve a specific article.
There are so many more reasons why you should start a blog, but these five points are key reasons why you must have your own blog today. Now that you have found your purpose in starting a blog and you have some pieces on standby, how can you start to expand your blog or portfolio?
1. Find a niche

Before you post your works online, understanding what you are marvellous at is one of the most important parts of blogging. If you have an interest in cooking, centre your focus around food, recipes, and cooking-related topics. There’s so much to talk about once you have established your own niche or specialty. All these topics are written for different audiences. For example, a café review appeals to people who love to explore new cafes, while a recipe post will appeal to those who love to cook at home. Your niche and topic will help you to decide what type of writing style you can experiment with. But if you do not have a niche, fret not! Your blog is entirely yours to play around with. Don’t worry and just have fun writing whatever you want.
2. Start writing and posting consistently
Now your blog is up and running, you have an interesting topic, but you’re missing something. Doesn’t it look a little empty? Time to plug in your creative juices and make your first post. You can even import your previous works into your current blog. Remember, the blog is yours and it is up to you what you want to write. The client is you. Aside from your work, write constantly, and keep it updated. A good way to keep our blog healthy and active is to post at least once a week, or any schedule you deem fit. More writings mean more examples to show to potential clients!
3. Feed your blog with various writings

Don’t limit yourself to only one style of writing. I have written short stories, poems, wordy articles, and even short articles on my blog. Although they aren’t published professionally, I have enjoyed writing them and if there is a need to show them as examples, they are part of my repertoire. Always prepare an umbrella before it rains. Don’t wait until your clients ask you for a certain type of article before you rush to get it written.
Now that you have found your purpose in starting a blog as well as the follow-through steps on implementing and expanding your writing portfolio, you are ready to take the literary world by storm. A blog should ignite your curiosity and be the reason why you crave to write and create. Think of your blog not only as your portfolio but also as a motivation tool that brings you closer to your dreams and career goals.

What Happened To Ambition And Our Drive To Succeed As We Grew Up?
Thursday, October 29, 2020
*This is a work that I have edited + proofread on behalf of a friend.
The original written article before editing and proofreading is here.
As we grow into adults, we’re smothered beneath responsibilities upon responsibilities. We forget our curious, innocent ambitions and drive to succeed as we grow up. Some of us settle for ordinariness as we just want to be comfortable.
Oftentimes, we lack a strong desire or drive to succeed, mostly because as we grow older, we get beaten down by the voices and opinions of others. Our perspective changes and thus, our ambitions are kept in a locked chest, nearly forgotten. We get so busy fitting into society or our bubble of comfort, we just want to stay afloat with whatever we have— never pressing on for more success. Hence when we are in our comfort zones, our ambitions, and dreams change. We no longer dwell on what we desire but instead, we settle for mediocrity and comfort. That’s when we give up on ambitions.
Ask every 10-year-old what they want to be and they’ll give you very enthusiastic answers.
“I want to be an astronaut!”
“I want to sew dolls!”

Think about us when we’re 10-years-old. For me, it was 15 years ago. What did I tell people when they asked me what I want to be when I grow up? I can’t remember anymore. As we grow older, things change, and we can have new ambitions. But how far are we straying away from making it happen?
Curiosity gets the better of us at most times and when we go all in. Just like in a game of poker, “all in” means that we give our best shot at winning. However, most people are afraid of going all in. Why? Because they are frightened by what they think they will lose.
The same applies to life. We lose more than just money in life – loss of trust for the promises that we did not keep, loss of friendships, etc. What happens when you don’t hit your goals? You lose and this is what intimidates us. We are afraid to lose.
When we are afraid to go all-in and give our best when we try to achieve our goals, chances are, they won’t happen at all because we are afraid! By definition, success means an accomplishment of your purpose or your goals. But what is success without failure? If you said you wanted to be a reputable lawyer, go ahead! If you wish to start a business selling cookies, go ahead! Whatever it is you have in mind, don’t be afraid to get going and make it happen. The train of opportunities waits for no coward.

Not having a purpose in life and just passing your days without a clear ambition in mind is lackluster. When you have a purpose, knowing what you love and have passion for your ambitions, you get a clearer picture. A great example to find your purpose is to ask yourself “why”. In many instances, most people would ask why they are doing something. An example, why am I eating? Because I’m hungry. Or why am I drawing? Because it ignites my passion. “Why am I working?” Because I need money. The answers to your “why” is what fuels your drive to succeed.
When was the last time you asked yourself why you are doing something? Why are you in this current situation or place in life? And just because we forget to question ourselves, our purpose gets blurred. Our ambition seems foggy and as time passes, it gets forgotten.
There are many inconsistencies in life. As working adults, there are times where we are tempted to procrastinate at work. Oh, I know we all procrastinate at some things, but we are so good at it, we just never get caught. We work hard for a day or two, and later on, we tend to become lenient towards ourselves at work, procrastinating at every chance we get because we might feel that “we can do that later” or“we can do this tomorrow”.
We promised to wash the dishes later - the next day came around and the dirty dishes are still in the sink. We promised to do it but we didn’t follow up on our promises sometime later. The same applies to our ambitions and drive to succeed. We keep thinking we can work on it the next day or the next. But to succeed in our ambitions, we need consistency.
When you choose to go all-in, you give yourself towards what you want to achieve in life. Be it your ambition or your goal. Your vision is what can be, what you believe, or faith in. Because you believe in it, you decide to take the leap of faith not knowing what is down in the rabbit hole. Will there be water? Or will you just hit the rock bottom? Most of us are caged in what we are taught and what we were told. However, isn’t it more exciting to go out and experience the world for yourself? Take the leap of faith.
Don’t be afraid, belief in yourself or your prowess. Having faith in yourself that you can do it and not letting voices or opinions tell you otherwise. If you think you can do it, do it. Start by doing the simplest things— you take one thing, one day at a time. Failures are bound to happen yet it's what you choose to do with those failures makes you take the leap of faith. Are you going to let an inconvenience or fear beat you down and stay down? Or are you going to get up and leap again?
Set milestones of tiny goals for yourself. Tiny goals will lead you towards your success and ambition. Tiny goals do look less intimidating and are easily achievable. Imagine looking at a giant pile of clothes to wash versus a few shirts to clean. Which would look more intimidating?
Tiny goals such as waking up at 6.00 AM every day or read one book a month is a great way to get started. Make sure you look it through because if you don’t what is the point? Discipline yourself and chug away. Set disciplinary actions if you don’t follow through. No video games, no heading out for a movie if you are not able to complete your tiny goals of the day. Starting the first step in the right direction is better than to not do anything at all. To find your drive, you need to know why you are doing it.

Introspection is one of the most common ways to understand yourself. Your goals, emotions, and thoughts. The same applies to this scenario. Ask yourself, what do you want to achieve or see yourself having – putting food on the table, working in reputable firms, start a life with your partner, afford better education for your children, etc. All these questions lead to asking yourself the big W-H-Y. To find your drive, you need to know why you are doing it.
You are working hard because you want to afford a new car next year. You’re burning the midnight oil to study hard because you want to enroll in your dream course at university. Every action is related to a “why”, so find yours. Ask yourself “why” you are doing whatever you are doing right now.
At the end of the day, finding out your purpose would help you to not only figure out why you would want to achieve a goal but consistently motivate you to continue working towards it.
If you hit the gym today, come home 20 minutes later, you look at yourself in the mirror, you will see - nothing. The next day you do it again - 20 minutes in the gym and you look in the mirror - nothing. However, if you do this every day, I promise you that you will get in shape— you will see results.
The same principle applies to drive yourself to succeed in your ambitions. It's not about how big or how much you can do, it's about how long you keep doing it. A journey never stops, it will only stop when you stop.
I do understand how tiring it is, to keep going but my ambition still seems so far. I feel like giving up. But if I take a quick look around, I’ll see how far I’ve come. Tough it out and continue, you’ll find that you’re closer and closer to the finishing line.
There are many things that we think we can’t do, and that happens when we stop believing and lose confidence in ourselves, thus not being able to put our hearts into making it happen. Most of us are lost, not knowing where to go from wherever we are— some of us are not even sure if we are on the right path in life. We get confused and intimidated by the people around us questioning us of our ambitions and future.
I’m here to remind you that you are not the first to go through this puzzling part of life and you will not be the last. As long as you remember that you used to have great, big ambitions, stay the course— no matter how big or how many things you dream of wanting in life. It is always our ambitions that drive us forward. Stop staying stagnant in your garden, water it, and watch it bloom.

Self Check-In Questions You Should Ask Yourself On A Weekly Basis

Why do we lose our ambition and drive to succeed as we grow up?
1. We are afraid of commitment
Curiosity gets the better of us at most times and when we go all in. Just like in a game of poker, “all in” means that we give our best shot at winning. However, most people are afraid of going all in. Why? Because they are frightened by what they think they will lose.

Why I Decided To Put Myself First Before Anyone Else

Why I Decided To Put Myself First Before Anyone Else
I have been told that I’m a selfish child, just because I made decisions for myself rather than to please others. - yours truly, me.
We often grow up learning to put others before ourselves, hence we learn to help others and to please others. The idea of putting yourself first was not thought of by our parents or guardians, we’re told that putting ourselves first is a selfish act, but I beg to differ; it is time to debunk this society myth.
Putting yourself first before anyone else is not selfish, especially when you are doing so to care for your physical, mental and emotional health.
Here is something that we all need to understand. You are responsible for your life, to bring you wherever you want to be because nobody else is going to do it for you. How are you going to achieve what you want without putting yourself first?
To illustrate this point, let me give you an example.
A friend of yours called up after a tiring day of work, wanting to let go some of their steam but you, on the other hand, is exhausted and needed sleep to tackle tomorrow morning’s office meeting. In this case, which choice would you make? Stay up and listen to your friend while battling your sleepiness and cue for rest? Or to tell them you needed some rest right now because your mind and body need the rest?
Many would have picked the former: We’d help our friend because we are too shy to turn them away, or we refused to be seen as selfish, but at what expense? After a long time being on the phone, you finally head to bed feeling more lethargic than usual thus making you groggy at the next day’s meeting. All you wanted was to be able to present well, with a smile on your face but instead, you’re looking fumbling around nervously and feeling tired.

All you wanted was to be able to present well, with a smile on your face but instead, you’re looking fumbling around nervously and feeling tired.
Is that the outcome you truly wanted?

If your answer is no, then it is time to learn to prioritize yourself, for you. There is no shame in doing so and you must understand that it is not a selfish act.
Here are a six reasons why I put myself first before anyone else:
1. A form of self-care
Prioritizing yourself is a form of constant self-care. Caring for your needs and putting yourself first will cultivate a better mental, physical and emotional health. I learn to care for my own body and mind by making sure I do what I want — that is, as long as it does not harm others or put yourself in danger.
Every day, I make sure to slow down, enjoy my cup of coffee and toast before going to work and I know with that, I will start my day at work in a better mood and with more energy. This is a simple act of putting myself first before tackling my daily routine.
I understand that to get to where I want to be, I have to do it myself. I always strive to build a better life for myself. We all long to enjoy a life where we can have whatever we want, whenever we want; but to get to that place of comfort and freedom, prioritizing yourself is of utmost importance.
2. My priority is me
I understand that to get to where I want to be, I have to do it myself. I always strive to build a better life for myself. We all long to enjoy a life where we can have whatever we want, whenever we want; but to get to that place of comfort and freedom, prioritizing yourself is of utmost importance.
For example, instead of hanging out with my friends every Saturday night just so they would have a hangout buddy, I choose to stay home and work on my side hustle, as my priority is to generate more income so I can get to where I want to be. This is an act of putting myself first before entertaining others.

Are you tired of always being taken advantage of? In many workplaces, as employees, we’re often told to take on more tasks than we can handle and this causes burnout. A simple way to set boundaries is to say “No”. When a coworker approaches me to ask for a favor in which I know that I’m not able to comply, I think of myself first.

3. It helps set boundaries

A simple way to set boundaries is to say “No”. When a coworker approaches me to ask for a favor in which I know that I’m not able to comply, I think of myself first.
Will I be able to take on that extra workload? Will I be able to deliver on time? Will this come at the expense of my health? If it’s not possible for me, I apologize and let them know that I’m not able to help them out, because at the end of the day, I will also have to face my own struggles when I complete my work as well.
When you start putting yourself before others, you’re showing people how you’re treating yourself, and letting them know how you prefer to be treated.
4. Your relationships will flourish
When you pay more attention to yourself, you learn to love yourself in many ways, and this in return cultivates a better relationship with yourself and others. The reason is that when you love yourself, you are more open, attentive and refreshing to be around. Your authentic self draws other people closer to you like a magnet.
If you ever come to a point where a relationship overwhelms you — be it with your parents, your partner or your friends, it is always wise to spend some time thinking about yourself and your needs first before trying to fix the relationship.
Imagine you have a bag full of candies and a child runs up to you asking for a few, you’d gladly give to them because you know you still have enough left for yourself. Giving away 3 - 4 pieces wouldn’t hurt, right? It applies the same to our lives. When we are so full of happiness and a giving heart, you’d tend to give more to others yet still feel satisfied with whatever you have.
5. We can give more when we are full

I used to make dinner for my partner and it felt like a chore because I was always making food only he likes; but when I start thinking of what I would like to have for dinners too and making them for the both of us, I found that I was happily taking on this task more than usual. This is an act of putting myself first so I can give more.

Learning to put yourself first before others is a hard pill to swallow, especially when we do not like being seen as selfish.

I’m not saying we should cut off helping people altogether, but we should learn to balance between helping others and helping ourselves. It is time to accept that prioritizing yourself is something we will need to do to advance in life — to live happier, cultivate better mental, physical and emotional health, and to achieve a life you want.

Why Fathers Are Often Underrated in Contributing to Who We Become Today?

Why Fathers Are Often Underrated in Contributing to Who We Become Today?
“Dad, my idea didn’t work out. I’m a little devastated.”
Years ago. I remember coming home from school one day, flunking my science project, and was in tears because I was so invested in my ‘perfect’ science project.
“That’s fine. It’s not the end of the world.”
My dad said nonchalantly from the couch, barely sparing me a look.
I waited for words of comfort but there was none, I left for my room fuming. I told myself that I would not dismiss someone this easily when they needed comfort.
Fast forward to this day, I still think about the scenario but instead of feeling confused and angry, I understood my father’s actions and words. All he meant was that failing my science project is okay. I need to accept failure and try again, and I embody that wisdom from him.
Fathers are often misunderstood in contributing to who we become today.
We see our father as pillars of strength but when it comes to educating us— be it about schoolwork, sports or sometimes comforting us during tough times, they may come off as nonchalant. You can go to him with a problem with your schoolwork and instead of going step-by-step with you, he gives you the answer and asks you to figure out yourself.
I grew up thinking my dad taught me nothing, but let me tell you how wrong I was. I just didn’t realize sooner about how different both of my parents are, and my father is equally as great a parent as my mother.

Why are fathers often misunderstood in contributing to who we become today?
1. Fathers are goofy
My father can make funny scenarios in any situation and often jokes about it. It’s frustrating. When a roasted chicken in the oven didn’t turn out right, I would have panicked and felt dreadful. My father, on the other hand, makes a joke about the burnt chicken and tells us we’ll just order in for the night. They are goofy because sometimes, there is no point in worrying and regretting something that didn’t turn out right, so just laugh it off and find an alternative.
2. Fathers encourage risk-taking
While there are times when taking risks requires a big leap of faith, fathers are often the ones encouraging us to leap.
“If you don’t take the risk that comes with doing something you want, you’ll end up regretting one day.”
I never understood every time my father took the risk to build a business from scratch, but I came to realize that taking risks is how you make the most of your life. It was something he wanted to happen— that is why he is willing to take the risk than to regret not trying.
Have you ever been in a situation where you asked if you’re allowed to go over to a friend’s place for a sleepover, and your father allows it without any questions? In truth, their answers are always a “yes”, if they don’t sense any danger in doing so.

Have you ever been in a situation where you asked if you’re allowed to go over to a friend’s place for a sleepover, and your father allows it without any questions? In truth, their answers are always a “yes”, if they don’t sense any danger in doing so.
Sometimes you wish your father had more concern towards you, but to them, it just shows that they trust you to be on your best and wish you to have fun because you’re only going to be this young once.

When we think our mothers are strict, wait until our father gets angry. That is when you know you’re in deep trouble. Deeper than any abyss. Most of the time, our father is chill and tends to not care much if you’re doing things rightfully; but when you’re doing something wrong, fathers won’t hesitate to discipline you strictly. I remember being scolded so harshly by my father and I still remember his lessons to this day.
Almost to the point where it seems like they do not care. When I had my first heartbreak, I was not only hurting but also frustrated at myself. My father wasn’t an emotional man, his approach towards my confused feelings was laid-back, it almost seemed like he didn’t care.

4. Fathers discipline more strictly

5. Fathers are always easy-going (ironically)
Almost to the point where it seems like they do not care. When I had my first heartbreak, I was not only hurting but also frustrated at myself. My father wasn’t an emotional man, his approach towards my confused feelings was laid-back, it almost seemed like he didn’t care.
He didn’t say a word of comfort or get mad along with me, but he did tell me that some things in life would hurt but don’t dwell on it. He cares for me, but he didn’t want to react emotionally to get me more riled up, hence it appears as if he doesn’t care.
Of course, in this time and age, some fathers helped a lot in doing house chores like washing the dishes, folding laundry, or cleaning the windows; but it is still the harsh truth that most of these duties fall onto their wives.
6. Fathers are silent workers
Of course, in this time and age, some fathers helped a lot in doing house chores like washing the dishes, folding laundry, or cleaning the windows; but it is still the harsh truth that most of these duties fall onto their wives.
As I grew up watching my father not helping with the household, I thought he was mostly lazy, but little did I know, he was constantly on call for work, taking business calls, having meetings at home and working longer hours than usual to make sure we all have our necessities met.
He’s a silent worker. I learned that he is fulfilling his responsibility, and we are expected the same for our roles in the household or any environment.

7. Fathers do not coddle you
I remember in the younger days, I wanted to ride a bicycle so badly. My father put me on a bicycle and asked me to start paddling. Getting wobbly and falling over at every attempt, my father just stood and watched while encouraging me to figure out how to work it myself.
Instead of spoon-feeding us with what we need, fathers always make us learn by ourselves. They do not offer things on a plate for us, instead, they give us an empty plate and ask us to fill it up ourselves, because we cannot expect to have things easy all the time.
Easily, fathers are mostly misunderstood for their unique ways of shaping us into who we are today. Our fathers taught us many lessons in so many unconventional ways, where it seems almost as though they are doing it wrong.

Their approach towards nurturing us is sometimes confusing; but truth to be told, they have been guiding us and teaching us in their own little quirky ways. Our fathers will always play an irreplaceable role in contributing who we become today — however unusual their methods may be.

How I Carve Out The Perfect Morning Routine To Stay Focused While Working From Home
But is it truly a luxury when working from home compromises our productivity and focus?
When my office first announced that we must work from home, I was beyond ecstatic! Imagine working from the comforts of my room, that is almost as if I was given some part of the freedom to work remotely, away from the busy office and pressure of my managers staring at me across the desk.
Little did I know, working from home is actually extremely distracting.
My couch looks extra inviting to just sit and laze on, while my television is just calling for me to fire it up and binge my favorite shows. I couldn’t possibly get all my work done with these temptations. Now with all that distraction, working from home seems less like a luxury and more like a test of discipline.

I couldn’t possibly get all my work done with these temptations. Now with all that distraction, working from home seems less like a luxury and more like a test of discipline.
When you find yourself easily distracted by the little things at home, a robust morning routine is one of the ways to kickstart your day and keep you focused throughout the day while working from home.
While most employees have started going back to the office since the CMCO, there will be some who are still working from home due to different shifts.
Here I will share some tips on building your perfect morning routine to keep you motivated and productive while working from home; these tips apply to freelancers and students as well (now that most classes are done online).

I’m not asking you to suddenly wake up before the sun rises; I’m saying if you usually wake up at 7 AM every day to head to work, you should be waking up at the same time even when you’re now working from home.

1. Wake up on time
I’m not asking you to suddenly wake up before the sun rises; I’m saying if you usually wake up at 7 AM every day to head to work, you should be waking up at the same time even when you’re now working from home.
While we’re able to cut down on commute time, waking up at the same time as you usually do helps to keep your sleep cycle regulated as well as offering you some extra hours to prep before work!
I wake up at 6.30 AM even when I’m working from home. It gives me a feeling of starting the day fresh and affords me a few extra hours to do something for myself instead of jumping straight into work.
When we’re working from home, we tend to cut ourselves some slack.
2. Read your daily affirmations
When we’re working from home, we tend to cut ourselves some slack.
“I don’t have to be as strict on myself as if I’m in the office / classroom.”
No. Put that thought away. Working from home demands just as much discipline as working in the office or classroom. We might be afraid to get into trouble with our managers or bosses back then, now we’re our own boss and manager. Keep yourself motivated by starting the day with some simple affirmations. It can be a short quote or a small paragraph, my personal favorite is:
Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment - Mahatma Gandhi.

3. Have a hearty breakfast
A hearty breakfast makes your tummy full and happy while keeping your mind focused and productive. Besides, having breakfast boosts your energy so you don’t feel sluggish until your next meal. Do not start your work until you have had your breakfast.
When we’re cooped up at home, it’s no doubt that we’ll mostly be thinking about what to prepare for our next meal and also looking for things to snack on. Stop yourself from looking for morning snacks or thinking of what to prepare for brunch by having a good breakfast before work.
These are all tiny distractions during your work; so if you can, get rid of them! I always prepare my breakfasts the night before to save time, overnight oats and sandwiches are my usual go-tos.
The truth is, when we are working from home, we do not move as much as we used to. You will start to feel some aches and pains when you are seated at your workspace for too long. I always find myself feeling awake with a sharper mind after a good workout.
4. Get your heart pumping and body moving
The truth is, when we are working from home, we do not move as much as we used to. You will start to feel some aches and pains when you are seated at your workspace for too long. I always find myself feeling awake with a sharper mind after a good workout.
At-home workouts are great to keep your heart rate up and body moving, also they rarely require special equipment. I practice simple at-home workouts for 10-15 minutes as soon as I wake up.
If you are the kind of person that hates exercising, a good alternative to get your limbs moving is to just take a walk around your house.

Ah, pajamas. The essence of working from home is to be able to work in our comfortable pajamas, isn’t it?

5. Mind your appearance
Ah, pajamas. The essence of working from home is to be able to work in our comfortable pajamas, isn’t it?
Working in your pajamas might give you all the comfort you wanted, but it affects your productivity and focus. Instead of your pajamas, perhaps try to put on nicer loungewear. A nice t-shirt and a pair of comfortable pants are a better alternative than slouchy pajamas.
They make you feel fresh; and thus making your mind think that you’re ready to tackle the day!
If your routine is to make coffee in your office’s pantry as soon as you get there, then do the same at home as well. Make your cup of hot coffee and bring it to your workspace to enjoy.
6. Incorporate one small routine from your office
If your routine is to make coffee in your office’s pantry as soon as you get there, then do the same at home as well. Make your cup of hot coffee and bring it to your workspace to enjoy.
My daily routine in the office is to greet everyone with a “Good Morning” as soon as I arrive. What I did was that I incorporate this daily routine into my morning routine.
I would send a good morning text message to all my coworkers and surprise, surprise - I found out that with this routine to start the day, I feel encouraged to work and complete my daily tasks.

Occasionally, we still get distracted despite taking the measures to avoid them, and that is okay if you know what you have to do when you snap yourself back into focus.

7. Have a to-do list of all your daily tasks
Occasionally, we still get distracted despite taking the measures to avoid them, and that is okay if you know what you have to do when you snap yourself back into focus.
A to-do list is a great way that works as a reminder of what you must complete for the day, such as respond to all emails, conference calls with the team, prepare presentation slides, etc.
I list my to-do tasks as soon as I start work and have it within my eyesight, so if I ever get sidetracked, I know where I’ve stopped and also how much I have left to do before I clock out.
It seems like there is a lot to do, but I assure you it is not as difficult. Now that you have read these simple tips on curating your perfect morning routine, it is time to implement it into your routine. Avoid feeling sluggish in the morning and get ready to kickstart your day with better focus and motivation to keep you productive.
